the shock of sitting down and going over a first draft is akin to waking up in a stranger's bed after a night of heavy drinking with a burning sensation in your crotch. Your first thought is "how did wind up here?" followed immediately by "what do I do to get out of it as quickly as possible?"
I write myself and am never a good judge of what I've written. I feel confident as I write it out, but then, in retrospect, I think, "This is awful," but I stop myself from deleting and put some distance between me and my work. Sometimes I'll find something I've written that I've forgotten about and I'll be surprised by how much of it is good and the editing comes easier because I see what's bad more clearly. Similarly, if someone reads my work back to me or explains it to me, I enjoy it more than if I read it to myself. Not sure why this is. COULD BE BECAUSE I DISLIKE MYSELF A LOT
