My mom's parents were horse people. She said that when one of the horses died, they would make sure that they didn't bury it where one of the other horses could see, or they would "pine" over the gravesite and stop eating, not leave the site, sometimes die themselves. Dolphins can do it a lot more deliberately, but other animals will make themselves die.
I've had two animals do this.
A fish I had also did this when I took it away from the frog.
